Many people have experienced the physical fitness benefits of added strength and agility that Pilates provides – and now more and more people are discovering how Pilates can be effective in their rehabilitation from injury.
Many injuries are caused by muscular imbalances within our bodies. And many things cause these imbalances – our posture, the way we walk, bend over, sit, lie down, or work out – basically the way we move. Most of us move incorrectly in some way or another, which puts too much pressure on some muscles and weakens others, causing an imbalance.
Take the back, for example: the way we move may put too much pressure on the spine, while weakening the pelvic muscles in the front of the body or vice-versa. Either scenario creates an imbalance, which means the body is much more perceptible to serious strains, pulls, tears or worse.
Flexibility is key
Pilates provides a greater degree of flexibility than most conventional forms of physical therapy – and this is true because Pilates exercises can be modified for each person and still be extremely effective.
You can go from very basic to very advanced movements depending on how you need to progress, or how badly you are injured.
Conventional physical therapy can often result in a person being given a set of exercises that may be too difficult, or too hard to tolerate. Those exercises may cause too much pain; equally, you might not be aware how to correctly position your body for maximum results – and that is something that Pilates teaches you to do.
Positive movement aids recovery
With Pilates, you work together with your instructor to learn the best positive movement sequences for your body.
When you create a positive movement experience, you are able to move forwards without pain. The more you move without pain, the more confident you become – and that confidence encourages you to try another movement or exercise. That is a very healthy rehabilitation cycle…
Physio-Led Pilates: helping you to move forward
Physio-Led Pilates – as taught by our qualified physiotherapists – aims to rebalance the muscular, joint, neural and central nervous systems of your body.
This develops improved posture, stability, balance, flexibility and co-ordination while helping reduce stress by encouraging correct and efficient breathing patterns. Therefore, it can claim to be totally holistic as it targets the mind and body with smooth flowing patterns of movement.
The exercises are progressive and functional and are perfect for patients looking for the next step to recovery. Whether it is from injury, working postures, chronic conditions, chronic pain or athletes looking to optimise performance, Physio-Led Pilates can help you move forward.
